2 IDEAS FROM THE PODCAST Id#1:
Idea #1: Learning to Code Through Entrepreneurship
"I basically started to learn after University by making apps by myself for myself...I didn't learn anything at University...I was supposed to [learn coding] but I was just more into like parties and beers with friends."
Marc shares his unconventional journey of learning to code not through formal education, but by diving headfirst into building apps and websites as an entrepreneur. He started with no knowledge of coding after university, trying to build a "Tinder for sports" app through trial-and-error and online resources. Despite initial failures, this hands-on approach helped him gain practical coding skills and an entrepreneurial mindset.
Idea #2: The Realities of the Indie Hacker Lifestyle
"I think the indie hackers have a very different lifestyle... I don't have an ambition to build a unicorn, I don't want VCs, I don't want employees. I just want to work for myself and have the complete freedom of being able to close my computer whenever, no calls, no meetings."
Marc provides insights into the day-to-day life of an indie hacker, a lifestyle-oriented entrepreneur building products alone without investors or employees. While offering freedom and flexibility, it requires wearing many hats - coding, marketing, handling ups and downs alone. He shares his typical routines, highlighting the need for discipline to create sustainable businesses without the ambition of "unicorn" successes.
1 KEY LEARNING
I started to learn coding with the framework and then slowly I got back to learning JavaScript and the basics of HTML, CSS and things.
Marc's initial failure with building an app led him to go back to basics - understanding core web technologies like HTML, CSS and JavaScript before attempting complex frameworks. This approach of applied learning by building projects resonates as valuable advice.
"Entrepreneurship is hard. And the brain struggles to understand non-linear outcomes. But if you stay in the game long enough (without sacrificing what's important to you), the reward is 1000x worth it. Just ship it.”
